Turkey’s Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has given the green light to a new zoning plan aimed at relocating neighborhoods in the heavily industrialized Dilovası area of Kocaeli province.
Dilovası, a hub for heavy industry, has seen a significant rise in pollution and cancer cases as industrial facilities have expanded in the area.
The approved plan allows for the rezoning of 26 hectares of land, with the initial focus on relocating the Tavşancıl neighborhood, which is currently intertwined with industrial facilities.
A report accompanying the decision highlights the potential risks associated with industrial growth, including air pollution and traffic congestion.
The plan’s objective is to decentralize industrial zones and unhealthy residential settlements, ultimately improving areas that pose health risks and sustainability concerns for local residents.
