Girl, 13, Killed in West Bengal Election Violence; Arrest made

Kaliganj, India – A 13-year-old girl died Monday in Nadia district, West Bengal, after a crude bomb exploded during a Trinamool Congress (TMC) victory rally, police said. The incident occurred in Kaliganj,following recent bye-elections.
Authorities arrested Adar Ali Sheikh, 28, in connection with the election violence. Preliminary investigations suggest the girl was standing near her home when the bomb was thrown. Local residents indicated her parents support Left political parties.
West Bengal police stated on X, “We shall spare no stones unturned to nab the culprits who were behind the incident. Raids are on in full swing to arrest those responsible for this extremely unfortunate death.”
ziaul Sheikh, a local resident who sustained injuries, said that TMC supporters were celebrating with colored powder and firecrackers, and that crude bombs were thrown at houses of CPI(M) and Congress supporters.One of these bombs killed the girl.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Kolkata has requested a report from the Krishnanagar police superintendent regarding the election violence.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief over the incident on X, stating she was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the girl’s death and assured strong legal action against those responsible.
The BJP has criticized the TMC following the incident. Sukanta Majumdar, state BJP president, described the festivity as a “terrorist attack” on X, condemning the use of bombs.
Alifa Ahmed of the TMC won the bye-election with 102,759 votes, defeating BJP candidate Ashish Ghosh, who received 52,710 votes. The election was held due to the death of Nasiruddin Ahmed, Alifa Ahmed’s father, who had held the seat since 2011, except for a brief period in 2016.
