A Canadian resident of Korean descent has won a substantial lottery prize, amounting to approximately 16 billion Korean Won. The win offers the opportunity for a long-awaited reunion with family overseas.
According to Lotto Max officials, Tae Seong Lee, residing in Edmonton, Alberta, matched all seven numbers – 5, 6, 16, 26, 29, 37 and 44 – in the October 7, 2025, draw. As the sole winning ticket holder for that draw, Lee is set to receive the full jackpot of 15 million Canadian dollars.
The winning ticket was purchased at a Petro Canada gas station located at 3003 Calgary Trail in Edmonton. Lee reportedly did not realize he had won for several months, only checking the ticket in January of this year. Upon discovering the win, he was, according to his own account, deeply shocked.
“I’ve always dreamed of this day,” Lee stated in an interview with Lotto Spot. “But when I first found out, I couldn’t quite believe it and had to scan again!” A primary motivation for Lee’s excitement is the prospect of finally visiting his mother in Korea, a trip he has been unable to make for several years. “This will allow me to do all of that,” he said, referring to travel and other aspirations.
Lee shared the news with his wife first, followed by his daughter, with all three celebrating the unexpected windfall. Discussions quickly turned to how the money would be used, with immediate plans focusing on financial stability and long-term goals.
Lee intends to use a significant portion of the winnings to pay off his mortgage and replace his current vehicle. He expressed a desire for a larger vehicle, potentially a truck. Beyond these immediate needs, Lee also hopes to dedicate resources to travel, community involvement, and charitable work.
Lotto Max jackpots can grow to a maximum of 70 million Canadian dollars, with an additional “Maxmillion” bonus prize sometimes available. Lee’s win represents a substantial single-jackpot payout, without the addition of the Maxmillion bonus. Sources indicate this is the largest lottery win recently reported among Korean expatriates.
Lottery officials acknowledge the public interest generated by large jackpot wins but emphasize that the odds of winning remain statistically low. They advise high-value winners to seek professional financial advice to ensure responsible long-term management of their winnings.
The delay in Lee claiming his prize is not uncommon, as winners often take time to process the news and seek guidance before coming forward. He purchased the ticket months before realizing his fortune, highlighting the often-unforeseen nature of lottery wins.
Lee’s story resonates with many who regularly purchase lottery tickets, embodying the hope of financial freedom and the opportunity to fulfill long-held dreams. His plans to prioritize family, financial security, and community contribution reflect a grounded approach to managing his newfound wealth.
The win comes as other lottery winners are also being announced across Canada. On Tuesday, February 2, 2026, a ticket sold in Quebec won a $14 million Lotto Max jackpot. Secondary prizes were also claimed on tickets sold in Ontario.
