Korean automotive software developers face a distinct speed crunch as the transition to software-defined vehicles accelerates, with 88% reporting pressure to outpace competitors like Chinese electric vehicle makers. At the same time, regional developers rate their current productivity well below the global average, according to a report published by BlackBerry business unit QNX on October 22, 2026.

Productivity Gap Confirmed in Global Survey

The findings stem from the 2026 SDV Developer Report, which surveyed 1,100 automotive software engineers across North America, Europe, and Asia, including a cohort of 100 developers in South Korea. While the pressure to accelerate development schedules stands among the highest in the surveyed markets, only 61% of local respondents rated their current development environment productivity as excellent. That figure trails the global average of 81% by 20 percentage points.

Developers identified three primary technical hurdles holding back output. Debugging and testing led the challenges at 41%, followed by a lack of software scalability at 37% and heavy reliance on hardware that remains difficult to secure at 37%. Regulatory compliance compounds these engineering bottlenecks, as 28% of Korean respondents reported project delays directly caused by shifting regulatory demands.

Regulatory Pressures and Core Infrastructure Burdens

The regulatory burden spans multiple technical domains within the vehicle architecture. Cybersecurity regulations and functional safety standards were each cited as difficult hurdles by 41% of local developers, while artificial intelligence and machine learning regulations presented challenges for 40%. Only 78% of Korean respondents expressed confidence in their ability to maintain continuous regulatory compliance, compared to a 91% global average.

Korean engineering teams spend an average of 41.6% of their total working time on foundational software and integration tasks. This allocation exceeds the global average of 34.8% and represents the largest share among all surveyed countries. As a result, 85% of Korean respondents stated that automakers must pivot their focus toward innovating in the application layer—the features experienced directly by drivers and passengers—rather than sinking resources into underlying software infrastructure. 98% emphasized that closer cooperation between original equipment manufacturers, tier-1 suppliers, and dedicated software firms is essential.

AI Adoption and Upcoming Industry Shifts

Artificial intelligence commands high expectations for future workflow transformations across the sector. A full 89% of Korean developers predicted that AI will exert a major influence on automotive software development over the next three to five years. The survey data also projects that AI tools could automate or replace an average of 43% of current development roles by the year 2035.

SDV 시대를 향한 전환에서 실질적인 성과를 내기 위해서는 개발 인력과 자원을 어디에 집중할 것인지 다시 생각해야 한다
