Melbourne secured a commanding victory over Richmond, with Kysaiah Pickett delivering a standout performance that proved pivotal in the Demons’ triumph.

The Demons dominated from the outset, leading at every break to claim a convincing win over the Tigers. Pickett, playing what was described as arguably the best game of his 109-match career, was instrumental in Melbourne’s control throughout the contest.

Rotating through the midfield, Pickett amassed 24 disposals and kicked five goals, earning best-on-ground honours. His ability to impact contests at the centre bounce and provide versatility in the forward line drew praise from former Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney, who highlighted the 23-year-old’s unique skill set.

“He does have that point of difference when you’re talking about small forwards,” Cooney said. “He can go into centre bounce and have an impact there which is just so invaluable, he’s not just a one trick pony, the issue is consistency.”

Cooney added that Pickett’s performance had a ripple effect across the team, noting how his presence allowed taller forwards like Harrison Petty to find space and contribute effectively. Petty kicked four goals in the match, further underscoring the Demons’ balanced attacking threat.

“He lit it up yesterday, we would love to see him do it every week because then Melbourne looks like a completely different team,” Cooney remarked. “They have spark, they have line breaking ability, they have goal kicking ability, which is what they have lacked, and others walk taller around Kozzy Pickett.”

The victory marked Melbourne’s first win of the season after a difficult start that included a five-game losing streak. Coach Simon Goodwin had made tactical adjustments ahead of the match, dropping forwards Bailey Fritsch and Jacob Van Rooyen while adapting to the absence of key defenders Steven May and Jake Lever.

Harrison Petty was shifted forward to accommodate the changes, and his four-goal haul demonstrated the effectiveness of the revised structure. Daniel Turner also returned to the side, contributing to a renewed look in Melbourne’s forward half that produced a controlled performance from start to finish.

Pickett’s influence extended beyond the scoreboard, with Cooney observing that defenders began to feel uneasy about his presence in the forward line, which in turn created opportunities for teammates. The Demons’ improved cohesion and attacking variety were evident as they maintained control across all quarters.

The result represented a turning point for Melbourne after a challenging beginning to the campaign, with the team showing signs of the resilience and dynamism that had been missing in earlier rounds. Pickett’s consistency and impact will be crucial as the Demons aim to build on this result and climb the ladder.
