Former Bulgaria national team coach Krasimir Balakov has stated that Ludogorets are effectively doing Levski Sofia’s work in the Bulgarian First League title race, suggesting there is no real intrigue left in the competition.
Balakov made the comments in an interview with Topsport.bg, where he asserted that Ludogorets are performing the role that Levski should be fulfilling in the title chase. His remarks come amid a tightly contested season where Levski currently hold a nine-point lead over their rivals, according to analysis from former national player Radostin Kishishev.
The Bulgarian First League title race has intensified as Ludogorets aim for a historic 15th consecutive league title, which would extend their existing world record. Ludogorets have won the Bulgarian First League in every season since their promotion to the top tier in 2011, with their 2025 title equalling European records set by Skonto and Lincoln Red Imps.
Despite Ludogorets’ historical dominance, Levski have emerged as strong challengers this season. Kishishev believes Levski have a “real chance” to win the title but warns that the contest with Ludogorets will likely go down to the wire. He notes that maintaining a lead is often more difficult than building one, and complacency could allow Ludogorets to close the gap.
Balakov also emphasized the importance of the national team achieving positive results, stating in an interview with БНТ Новини that it is crucial for the Bulgarian national side to secure favorable outcomes in their matches. This comes after his resignation as Bulgaria head coach following racist abuse directed at England players by home fans during a Euro qualifier match in Sofia.
In another interview with ФОКУС, Balakov discussed the need for a restart in Bulgarian football, arguing that without state support, meaningful progress in the sport cannot be achieved. He highlighted structural challenges facing the national game and called for systemic improvements to elevate Bulgarian football’s standing.
The upcoming match between Ludogorets and Levski Sofia is expected to be pivotal in determining the outcome of the title race. A loss for Ludogorets in that encounter could effectively end their hopes of extending their record-breaking streak, potentially triggering shifts in team dynamics and fan sentiment across the league.
