Krejčíková Questions Czech Athlete of the Year Criteria After Second-Place Finish
Prague, Czech Republic – Tennis star Barbora Krejčíková expressed mixed emotions following her second-place finish in the Czech RepublicS Athlete of the Year award, questioning the criteria used by journalists in their voting.
Krejčíková, who won Wimbledon this year and reached the semifinals of the WTA finals, finished behind Olympic kayaking champion Josef Dostál. She took to Instagram to voice her surprise at the placement, notably the seventh-place finish of fellow Olympian and mixed doubles gold medalist tomáš Macháč.
“I want to congratulate Josef Dostál on his victory, and also all the other awarded athletes,” Krejčíková wrote. “Czech sport is full of amazing personalities, and it’s great that they bring us joy and make us proud.”
However, she added,”The results of the poll left me with mixed feelings again this year.”
Krejčíková questioned the emphasis on Olympic medals, pointing out that Czech athletes who won gold at the Tokyo Games were not among the top three.
“If an Olympic medal is a key criterion, why aren’t our Olympic gold medalists in the top three places? Tomáš is even seventh?” she asked.
Krejčíková also referenced her own 2021 season, when she won the French Open in both singles and doubles, secured Olympic gold with Kateřina Siniaková, and triumphed at the WTA Finals. Despite this “dream” year, she finished second in the Athlete of the Year poll.
“What exactly does an athlete have to win to deserve this award in the eyes of journalists?” she pondered.
Krejčíková, who missed the awards ceremony due to illness, received 50 fewer points than Dostál. Olympic canoeing champion Martin fuksa finished third, ahead of Siniaková.
