Kristian Blummenfelt’s Journey: From Olympic Setback to LA 2028 Aspirations
Kristian Blummenfelt will not switch to professional cycling in 2025. The Norwegian triathlete has unfinished goals in triathlon and a personal challenge ahead.
At 30, Blummenfelt spent much of 2024 trying to return from long-distance racing to Olympic distance. He aimed to defend his Olympic title in Paris but finished a disappointing 12th. This result was hard for him, especially after three years of success using the ‘Norwegian Method’ alongside his teammate Gustav Iden.
Blummenfelt feels a strong need to prove he can overcome this setback. He mentioned the possibility of competing in Los Angeles in 2028, driven by his desire to achieve what many consider ‘Mission Impossible.’
In a recent podcast with Rich Roll, he expressed uncertainty about racing in L.A. but acknowledged that his experience in Paris felt like a series of mistakes. He wants to demonstrate that moving back down from Ironman distance is possible.
Blummenfelt recounted his preparation for Paris. After winning the half Ironman World Championship in St. George, he shifted focus to Olympic distance and sought qualification points. He felt confident after performing well in races in 2022. However, 2023 brought challenges, as he struggled to regain top run speed.
Throughout 2023, he was 50 to 60 seconds too slow on the run to be competitive. While he excelled in biking, his swimming and running did not meet his standards. As the 2024 season started, he still felt he was not fast enough.
Blummenfelt believes training errors led to his Paris results. Despite maintaining hope before the Games, he realized his performance fell short. He tried to stay positive but sensed his chances were diminishing.
In summary, Kristian Blummenfelt is focused on overcoming his Olympic disappointment and aims to showcase his potential before the next Olympics.
