Kochi, Kerala — The husband of a minor girl who became a viral sensation during the Kumbh Mela has stated that she is pregnant and that police have not yet summoned him for questioning, despite ongoing investigations into her underage marriage and alleged exploitation.

The girl, identified only as a resident of Kochi, gained widespread attention after videos of her performing at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj went viral on social media in early 2026. According to her husband, who spoke to Manorama Online under condition of anonymity, the girl is currently in her second trimester of pregnancy. He claimed that despite repeated requests from her family and legal guardians, local police in Kochi have not formally summoned him for interrogation, citing procedural delays.

Mathrubhumi reported on April 18 that Madhya Pradesh police had temporarily halted proceedings against the girl’s husband after initial inquiries, stating that further verification was needed regarding her age and marital status. However, no formal closure of the case has been announced, and Kerala police continue to monitor the situation.

Child rights activists in Kerala have expressed concern over the lack of timely police action, emphasizing that under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, any marriage involving a minor is legally void and constitutes a criminal offense.

“The fact that a minor girl, who was paraded as a viral sensation at a national religious event, is now pregnant raises serious questions about the failure of safeguards,” said a Kochi-based child welfare officer, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case. “Authorities must act swiftly to determine whether she was subjected to coercion, trafficking, or exploitation under the guise of marriage.”

As of April 19, 2026, the girl remains in the custody of her family in Kochi. Police have confirmed that a preliminary inquiry is underway but have not disclosed whether charges will be filed against her husband or any intermediaries involved in arranging her travel to the Kumbh Mela.

The case has reignited debates over the exploitation of minors in the name of viral fame and religious participation, particularly when such events are monetized through social media attention.
