Kupcho, Maguire Seize Lead at Dow Championship
MIDLAND, Mich. – Jennifer Kupcho and Leona Maguire combined for a 10-under-par 60 in Friday’s better-ball format, propelling them to the top of the leaderboard at the Dow Championship. The LPGA Tour’s unique team event is being held at Midland Contry Club.
The Solheim Cup competitors posted a 13-under 127 total, following their initial alternate-shot round of 67 on Thursday. Their impressive performance gives them a narrow advantage in the tournament.
Cassie Porter and Gemma Dryburgh, who led after the first round, are just one stroke behind after shooting a 62. The competition remains tight as the tournament heads into the weekend. The teams will face another alternate-shot round Saturday, followed by a final better-ball round Sunday to determine the Dow Championship winner.
Several other teams are also in contention. Sarah Schmelzel and Albane Valenzuela, Manon De Roey and pauline Roussin-Bouchard, and Yan Liu and Yahui Zhang are all tied at 11-under after strong performances.
Lexi Thompson and Meghan Kang, who were tied for second after the first day, slipped to a tie for ninth at 8-under after a 65.
“The plan today was just to give ourselves as many chances as we could, try to get two chances on every hole,” Maguire, of Ireland, said. “generally speaking, we did that. It was nice to start off with a birdie and sort of an eagle very early on to get the ball rolling.”
“Lots of golf to go,” said Kupcho, the 2022 winner with fellow American Lizette Salas. “I think just kind of staying where we’re at and continuing what we’re doing the best we can.”
“It was a great round,” Valenzuela said. “I feel like I definately feed off Sarah’s energy. She makes it really easy for me on the course.”
“Fairways and greens, hole a few more putts,” Thompson said. “That’s the goal.”
Defending champions Ruoning Yin and Jeeno Thitikul, both highly ranked in women’s golf, are currently at 6-under after a round of 66.
