Kurdish Forces in Syria Attempt to Evacuate Kurds from Aleppo
Syrian Kurds Trapped as Turkish-Backed Forces Advance
Tal Rifat, Syria – Tens of thousands of Syrian Kurds are trapped in a shrinking pocket of territory in northern Syria as Turkish-backed forces advance, raising fears of a humanitarian catastrophe.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a U.S.-backed Kurdish-lead militia, has accused Turkey of deliberately targeting civilians and blocking escape routes.
“We are actively working with all parties involved in Syria to ensure the safety of our people and facilitate their safe movement to safer areas in the northeast,” said SDF spokesperson Aram Abdi in a statement.
The situation escalated dramatically this week when a jihadist alliance led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, launched a major offensive in northwestern Syria. HTS and its allies have seized control of large swathes of territory, including Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city.
The SDF, which played a key role in defeating ISIS in Syria, has been caught in the crossfire. Abdi said the SDF attempted to establish a humanitarian corridor between its eastern regions, Aleppo, and the Tal Rifat area to protect civilians from potential massacres.
“However, attacks by Turkish occupation-backed armed groups have disrupted this corridor,” Abdi said.
The syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a London-based monitoring group, reported that Turkish-backed groups have surrounded approximately 200,000 Kurds in Tal rifat and nearby villages. SOHR also noted that dialogue lines have been cut in predominantly Kurdish areas, fueling concerns about a potential massacre.
The Syrian civil war, which began in 2011, has become a complex and multifaceted conflict involving various factions, including Kurdish forces, moderate and radical Sunni rebels, the Syrian government, and its allies, and also foreign powers backing different sides. The current offensive by HTS and its allies, coupled with the Turkish-backed advance, has created a dire situation for civilians caught in the middle. The international community is calling for a ceasefire and safe passage for civilians trapped in the conflict zone.
