Kuwait City,Kuwait – Ministers of Culture from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states concluded meetings in Kuwait on Thursday,October 9,2024,with a firm endorsement of Kuwait’s candidacy for membership on the World Heritage Committee of the United nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Strengthening Gulf cultural Collaboration
The Culture Ministers Committee of the GCC, comprised of representatives from all six member states – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates – convened to discuss strategies for bolstering joint cultural initiatives. The meetings focused on preserving the unique cultural identity of the gulf region and fostering a sense of shared heritage among its citizens.
Key outcomes from the committee’s deliberations included the adoption of a calendar of joint Gulf cultural events spanning 2026, 2027, and 2028. this calendar aims to promote cultural exchange and collaboration across the region. The ministers also approved a framework for joint Gulf action in the creative cultural industries, recognizing the economic and social importance of these sectors.
UNESCO Candidacy and Accessibility Initiatives
A central focus of the meetings was the unanimous support for kuwait’s bid to join the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Membership on this committee is highly sought after, as it allows a nation to play a notable role in identifying and protecting sites of outstanding universal value. The committee’s endorsement signals a strong regional commitment to Kuwait’s efforts in cultural preservation. The UNESCO World Heritage List currently includes over 1,100 sites across 168 countries.
Furthermore, the ministers agreed to prioritize inclusivity in future cultural events, enhancing participation opportunities for people with disabilities. this commitment reflects a broader effort to ensure that cultural experiences are accessible to all members of society.
Publications and Event Regulations
The committee also approved the publication of the third edition of the “Guide to writers,” a resource intended to support and promote literary talent within the GCC. In addition, standardized work regulations for joint gulf events were adopted to ensure consistency and efficiency in the planning and execution of future collaborations.
