Kyiv Hit by Russian Strikes; Death Toll Rises to 15
At least 15 people are dead and dozens wounded following Russian strikes on Kyiv, ukrainian officials reported Tuesday. The overnight bombardment ranks among the most intense the capital has experienced since Russia’s full-scale invasion began more than three years ago.
Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said Russia launched 440 drones and 32 missiles across the country. Moscow’s defense ministry claimed its air defenses intercepted 147 Ukrainian drones overnight.
The Kyiv strikes lasted more than nine hours, forcing residents into shelters from before midnight until after sunrise. Officials said a ballistic missile struck a nine-story apartment building. 27 districts of the city came under fire. Kyiv Mayor vitali Klitschko confirmed a 62-year-old U.S. citizen was among the dead.
“Waking up in utter nightmare: people trapped under rubble and full buildings collapsed,” Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko wrote on X. Klymenko said rescue teams continue working to free people.
Loud explosions and machine gun fire from Ukrainian air defense units punctuated the night as they attempted to down drones. Sirens disrupted rescue operations, hampering efforts to find survivors in the rubble.
Russia has intensified its air attacks on Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, employing waves of drones and decoys to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses. Kyiv also has launched attacks, as direct talks between the warring sides have failed to secure a ceasefire.
President Volodymyr Zelensky called the strikes “pure terrorism,” accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of enabling the attacks. “It is bad when the powerful of this world turn a blind eye to this,” he said. “It is indeed the terrorists who shoudl feel the pain, not normal, peaceful people.”
Drone strikes also hit Odesa, killing one person and injuring at least 10,klymenko said.
What’s next
Rescue operations continue in Kyiv as authorities assess the full extent of the damage and casualties. International pressure on Russia is expected to mount following the intensified attacks.
