Man on Bail shoots Off-Duty Officer During Struggle, Court Hears

A man who was on bail for previous offences allegedly shot an off-duty police officer in the thigh during a struggle over the officer’s firearm, a court has been told.
Incident Details Emerge in Court Proceedings
The court heard that the accused, Knell, discovered the off-duty officer had a gun concealed in his waistband. Despite the officer identifying himself, a struggle ensued. During this altercation, Knell reportedly grabbed and removed the firearm from the officer’s holster.
A Violent Confrontation and its Aftermath
“There was a struggle between them to try and control the firearm,” the prosecution stated, detailing how a single round was fired during the fight. the bullet passed through the victim’s thigh, exiting just above his knee.
A woman present in the house at the time also sustained an injury. Fragments from the bullet embedded in her lower leg, causing an ankle injury.
Following the shooting, police received reports that Knell had gone to a nearby shed and then entered another house in the neighbourhood.He allegedly grabbed and restrained a teenage boy before his arrest.
Bail Breach and Court Adjournment
In court, defense solicitor John Greer highlighted that this incident marked Knell’s first breach of bail, despite being on bail for many months. Mr. Greer emphasized that Knell himself had reported the breach. He explained that Knell had been struggling with not being able to see his son but understood there was a process to follow to achieve this.
Adjourning the case to September 5,Judge Meehan stated that given the police’s attitude,Knell “will be allowed to return to bail.”
