The KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg has granted an urgent interdict authorizing police to take immediate action against the Labour and Civic Organisation (Laco), the MK Party, and other respondents accused of intimidating and disrupting businesses owned by KN Brand Properties CC. The company operates the Kara Nichas fast-food chain.
The order was granted on May 8, 2026, by Acting Judge Takchund. The legal action was brought by KN Brand Properties CC, which was represented by Siva Chetty and Associates. The application targeted Laco, the MK Party, several specific individuals, and all persons affiliated with the first and second respondents.
Protections Against Business Disruption
The court order specifically protects the listed business premises of the applicant from various forms of interference. This includes protections against unlawful entry, the disruption of business operations, and threats directed at management and staff. The interdict also prohibits the damage of property and other conduct that has been linked to recent protests against illegal immigration.

Kara Nichas is recognized in KwaZulu-Natal for its philanthropic work, community outreach, and affordable meal offerings.
Police Authority and Enforcement
Under the terms of the order, the South African Police Service (SAPS), including the Public Order Policing unit, is authorized to arrest and detain any respondents who violate the interdict. The order prohibits the respondents, and those acting under their direction, from engaging in several specific activities:
- Entering business premises or interfering with operations.
- Intimidating or harming customers, employees, managers, or directors.
- Damaging property or inciting violence.
- Sending threatening messages or publishing defamatory statements.
The sheriff of the court is authorized to serve the order immediately, with the assistance of SAPS if necessary. According to reporting by The Witness, the sheriff is empowered to:
“take all steps necessary to prevent the respondents from breaching this order in any manner and to give effect thereto by arresting, detaining and appropriately charging the respondents upon such occasions”
