A recent Enterprise Development Bootcamp, a collaboration between Samsung South Africa and Ocule IT, aimed to equip young electronics technicians with the skills to launch and grow their own businesses, focusing on consumer electronics repair and innovation in KwaZulu-Natal.
Boosting Entrepreneurship in kwazulu-Natal
Samsung South africa and Ocule IT recently concluded an Enterprise Development Bootcamp designed to foster entrepreneurship among graduates of the Samsung Electronics Technician Programme and Ocule IT’s Electronics Technician/Artisan Programme. The initiative seeks to address the need for skilled technicians capable of repairing consumer electronics, while together promoting self-sufficiency and innovation within local communities.
The bootcamp culminated in a ”Pitch and Polish” session where top performers were awarded cash prizes to support their business ventures. These awards were structured to support businesses at different stages of development:
- Established SMEs: R100,000
- Start-ups: R75,000
- Ideation (aspiring entrepreneurs): R50,000
A Broader Commitment to Skills development
Nicky Beukes, Samsung EEIP project manager, emphasized the bootcamp’s alignment with samsung’s broader commitment to entrepreneurship and digital skills development in South Africa. “As a socially responsible company, we are intent on investing in KwaZulu-natal – the country’s gateway for African and global trade – as well as contributing to the province’s youth entrepreneurship,” Beukes stated.

According to Statistics South Africa, KwaZulu-natal’s economy contributes significantly to the national GDP, making it a key region for economic development and job creation. The province faces challenges with youth unemployment, which this programme directly addresses.

sanele Gcumisa, managing member of Ocule IT, highlighted the program’s holistic approach. “the programme is a key driver of job creation and small business development, contributing to economic growth and community empowerment in KwaZulu-Natal,” Gcumisa explained. “It goes beyond providing financial aid; it is a comprehensive initiative designed to empower young technicians with the essential business skills and knowledge needed for sustainable growth and success.”
Ocule IT and Samsung are committed to providing ongoing guidance, mentorship, and support to help participants establish viable businesses and secure further investment. This includes assistance with business plan development, marketing strategies, and financial management.
