LA Olympics 2028: Gender Equality Takes Center Stage

The Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will showcase a significant shift toward gender equality, with adjustments to team sizes and the introduction of new mixed events. The women’s football tournament will expand to 16 teams, while the men’s event will decrease from 16 to 12. This marks the first time a women’s event will have more participating countries than its male counterpart.
Boxing will achieve gender parity with the addition of a women’s weight category.Water polo will also see an increase in women’s teams as part of the effort to balance athlete quotas.
The Olympic program will feature an expanded mixed events schedule. Archery, athletics (4x100m mixed relay), golf, gymnastics, rowing coastal beach sprint, and table tennis are among the sports adding mixed team competitions.
Rowing will introduce three new events: women’s solo (CW1x), men’s solo (CM1x), and mixed double sculls (CX2x) in a coastal beach sprint format. Sport climbing will feature boulder and lead events as separate medal opportunities. The 3×3 basketball tournaments will grow from eight to 12 teams.
According to the IOC, gender equality was a primary factor in shaping the schedule. The initial program included 5,333 female athletes and 5,167 male athletes. The additional sports will bring in 322 female and 376 male athletes.
Of the 351 events, 161 are women’s, 165 are men’s, and 25 are mixed. The five sports proposed by the LA28 Organizing Committee—baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, and squash—will add 698 athlete slots.
