A devastating sequence of events in the Los Angeles suburb of Chatsworth left five people dead after an allegedly impaired driver crashed a Ford Expedition into an LA Metro bus, which was followed two hours later by a fatal news helicopter crash, according to reports from CNN and local officials.
The Chatsworth Bus Collision and Arrest
The tragedy began at approximately 5 p.m. on a Tuesday evening when an SUV driven by Bailee Lynn Rios ran a red light, bypassed stopped traffic by entering opposing lanes, and slammed at full force into an eastbound LA Metro bus filled with commuters returning home from work, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman and the Los Angeles Police Department.
The impact caused the Ford Expedition to lodge almost fully inside the bus, while passengers were trapped between scraps of metal and glass and one person was thrown into an intersection. Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Brandon Silverman described the harrowing initial scene faced by first responders. Two bus passengers, identified as 31-year-old Gage Weida and 46-year-old Daniel Castillo, were killed in the collision, according to official statements.
Investigators stated that Rios was driving well beyond the speed limit while allegedly impaired by drugs, and law enforcement officers found narcotics inside the SUV. District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that Rios has been charged with second-degree murder, driving under the influence, and reckless driving, and she faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison. Just two hours after the initial bus disaster, a news helicopter providing aerial coverage of the wreckage for KNBC-TV NBC4 and KVEA-TV crashed into a parking lot one block east, igniting a massive blaze and adding a loud explosion to the unfolding emergency, according to CNN coverage.
Three lives were claimed in the subsequent accident: pilot George Marciniw, aerial photojournalist-reporter Eliana Moreno, and Edy Gutierrez Mejia, a young tourist present on the ground. Fire and police personnel, along with nearby news crews, quickly redirected their rescue efforts from the bus wreckage to the helicopter inferno. Capt. Brandon Silverman told CNN that handling two major incidents of that magnitude within a few blocks in such a short window created a unique situation for emergency departments.
Federal investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration launched an investigation to determine the cause of the helicopter crash, pointing to a video of the aircraft’s descent as a critical piece of evidence.
