Los Angeles Mayor Imposes Curfew Amid Immigration Protests

Updated ⁣June 10, 2025

Los Angeles ‍Mayor Karen Bass announced ⁢a curfew for downtown Los Angeles Tuesday, marking the fifth consecutive day ⁤of⁣ demonstrations against Immigration⁤ and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. The ⁢curfew, effective from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, addresses looting and vandalism during the protests.

The move comes as the ⁣Trump management and ⁢Democratic leaders clash over the appropriate response to the ongoing protests. President Trump has⁤ stated he invoked a legal provision to federalize the California National Guard and deployed roughly 700 marines to “restore order.” State and local authorities, however, oppose this⁣ intervention, accusing Trump of escalating tensions surrounding the immigration⁣ protests.

Bass addressed the city in an evening briefing, stating, “I wanted to let the city know that I have declared ‍a local emergency and issued a ‍curfew for downtown Los Angeles to stop the vandalism, to stop the looting.” ‌She⁣ anticipates ⁣the curfew will remain ‍in effect for several⁣ days.

It is extremely important‌ to ⁤know that what is happening in this 1 square mile is not affecting the city… Some of the imagery of the protests and the violence gives ‍the appearance that this is a city-wide⁤ crisis, and it⁣ is not.

While acknowledging the “meaningful” vandalism and violence, Bass emphasized the localized nature of the unrest. She clarified that the protests are contained within a ⁤single square mile and do not reflect a city-wide crisis. The immigration protests and ICE raids have ignited similar demonstrations across the ‌country.

what’s next

The ‌situation remains fluid, with the curfew’s effectiveness and the ongoing dispute‌ between the federal government and local officials determining the near-term trajectory⁢ of the protests and the response to them. Further developments are expected as the curfew remains in place and‍ discussions continue ⁣between various⁤ levels of government regarding immigration policy ⁢and federal intervention.
