Bicyclist Killed in South LA Hit-and-Run; Police Investigate Street Takeover Link

Los angeles police are seeking the public’s help in finding a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a bicyclist in South Los Angeles. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on June 1 at the intersection of Century Boulevard and San Pedro Street. Jose Villalobos, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives are exploring a possible connection between the hit-and-run and recent street takeovers in the area. Det. Ryan Moreno said a large street takeover occurred within a mile of the incident around the same time. Police are examining surveillance footage to determine if the suspect vehicle was involved in the illegal street racing activity.

After the collision, the bicycle became lodged under the car, creating sparks as the driver fled toward the 110 Freeway, Moreno said.
The hit-and-run suspect apparently visited a liquor store just before the fatal incident. Century Boulevard is a busy thoroughfare, and Moreno urged pedestrians and cyclists to prioritize thier safety. He advised against assuming drivers will see or stop for them.
“(He) has a son, has a brother, has family in the area. I know they’re pretty upset, pretty distraught,” Moreno said.
