SAN CRISTÓBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico (AP) — The ​National Academy of Medicine​ of Mexico has recognized Dr. Roberto⁤ Gómez ⁣Alfaro for his extensive ⁢work serving ⁢rural communities in⁢ Chiapas and providing aid⁤ to Guatemalan ⁣refugees during the 1980s.

the recognition was ‍bestowed during the ‍Extramural Symposium on‌ emerging health problems along Mexico’s ⁢southern border, held at the ‍Southern ⁤Border College (ECOSUR), ⁤which convened numerous health experts.

Academy President Lauds ⁤Gómez‌ Alfaro’s Contributions

Raúl Carrillo Esper, president of the Academy, ‍established in 1864, emphasized the meaning of Dr.Gómez⁤ Alfaro’s contributions. “Thanks to women and ⁢men like dr. ‌Gómez alfaro, the Mexican‌ homeland became; ⁤this new era of Mexico. Without them, it would have been something very different,” Carrillo Esper said,‌ explaining the rationale behind the honor.

Decades of Service to Vulnerable populations

Héctor Ochoa Díaz-López, a​ researcher ⁣and‌ head ⁣of the Academic​ Group Emerging Epidemiological⁤ Diseases within Ecosur’s⁢ Department of​ Health, described the recognition as “a tribute and deserved recognition to ⁣a life dedicated to medicine and the health service of the poor communities of Chiapas.”

Ochoa Díaz-López ‍noted that Dr. Gómez‌ alfaro, father of the⁢ current Secretary of Health of Chiapas, Omar Gómez Cruz, dedicated his expertise to ​Chiapas’ rural ‍population, particularly those vulnerable ⁣to malnutrition and diseases related to poverty.

He added that Gómez Alfaro supported ⁢the Tojolabal and Selva plans, collaborating with the National Polytechnic Institute⁤ of Medicine to establish a network of health outposts.⁣ These efforts included training promoters, conducting vaccination campaigns, treating illnesses, and implementing comprehensive sanitation​ programs, including latrine construction and courses on vegetable‌ cultivation and animal husbandry.

Aid to Guatemalan Refugees

“Our ⁢recognition of‌ their noble work in favor of Guatemalan refugees, to whom he provided⁤ medical attention⁣ and ‍encouragement, leading to the camps health and hope,” Ochoa‍ Díaz-López said, referring to the period when refugees sought refuge in Mexico ​fleeing conflict in their home country in 1980.

Foundation of Fraternity ⁤Hospital
