Spanish pop group La Oreja de Van Gogh is expanding its musical legacy to the big screen as the subject of an ambitious original romantic musical titled “Puedes Contar Conmigo,” featuring direction by Fernando González Molina, variety.com reported.
La Oreja de Van Gogh Brings Its Catalog to Cinema
The film project centers on the band’s extensive catalog of accessible pop-rock tracks and soaring choruses. La Oreja de Van Gogh stated that seeing their music gain a new life in cinema is a dream for the group. The production draws upon decades of relatable emotional themes, ranging from break-up nostalgia in songs like “Los Rosas” and “La Playa” to fleeting fated love in “Jueves” and the happiness of a great romance in “El último vals.”
Director Fernando González Molina is collaborating with screenwriter Miguel López Martínez on an original script that utilizes the band’s lyrics. González Molina stated that translating the group’s universe into an original story presents a giant challenge and fulfills a personal dream of updating romantic musicals with contemporary cinematic codes. The director previously helmed blockbusters such as “Three Steps Above Heaven,” “I Want You,” and the period drama “Palm Trees in the Snow,” which grossed €17.1 million ($19.8 million) at the Spanish box office.

Producer Pedigree Backs the Musical Project
The ambitious film features a prominent production team consisting of Beltrán Cortázar, Domingo Corral, and Gonzalo Sálazar-Simpson, with La Oreja de Van Gogh serving as executive producers. Cortázar is the former CEO of Suma Content, where his credits include Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo’s seven-part series “La Mesías.” Sálazar-Simpson founded Lazona and produced the Goya Best Picture winner “No Rest for the Wicked” alongside “Spanish Affair” and “Spanish Affair 2.” Corral enters the project as his first announced film following a tenure as Head of Fiction and Entertainment at Movistar Plus.
Corral noted that the production aims for a level of ambition matching the band’s multi-generational emotional history across Spain, Latin America, and the U.S. The producers stated that their primary challenge is to support the creative team in making this vision as large as possible.
Comeback Tour and Spotify Milestones Pave the Way
The feature film announcement follows a milestone for the band, which recently became the sole Spanish group with a track in Spotify’s Billions Club. The project also rolls off a comeback tour featuring Amaia Montero back as lead vocalist. That tour staged over 100 concerts and sold more than 400,000 tickets across Spain, demonstrating the group’s resilient, cross-generational fandom.
We’re at a beautiful moment at our career, feeling the affection of many, many people and we believe ‘Puedes Contar Conmigo’ will be a marvellous celebration of what unites us with our audience.
