Location and Context

La Pedrera Clubhouse is located in Atlixco, Puebla, Mexico, about two hours from Mexico City. It is part of the Cola de Lagarto development and sits within the Tentzo mountain range, a semi-desert landscape featuring acacias, yuccas, and wild grasses.

Design and Layout

The clubhouse is designed by Ezequiel Aguilar Martínez and was completed in 2023. The project occupies a hill, offering panoramic views of the golf courses, the Atlixco valley, and the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes. The design features a circular plan, opening the building to its surroundings. The layout includes a restaurant, leisure rooms, restrooms, and general amenities.

Architectural Elements

  • Exterior Skin: The exterior is composed of curved walls built with locally sourced stone, emerging from the topography to provide structural support.
  • Interior Spaces: The building has a series of concentric skins. The outer wall is followed by a glazed facade that connects interior spaces with the landscape, optimizing natural light.
  • Central Space: The heart of the building features a reflecting pool and a large oculus in the concrete slab, allowing landscape elements to rise and subtly mark the structure’s presence.
  • Functionality: The entire program is resolved on the ground floor and underground level. The roof slab serves as a 360-degree viewing deck with a multipurpose area for temporary events.

Materials and Integration with the Environment

The building uses regional stone, exposed concrete in the slabs, and walls finished with temperate plaster (a local earth material). These materials are chosen to allow the building to blend naturally with the environment and age gracefully.

Key Features

  • Area: 1503 m²
  • Manufacturers: The project involves products from CEMEX España, Helvex, Iluminamos, Interceramic, Tecnolite, and Ternium Hylsa.
  • Panoramic Views: The design provides views of the golf courses and the surrounding mountains and volcanoes.
  • Flexible Spaces: The innermost ring features rotating wooden doors, allowing spaces to be as open or closed to the exterior as necessary.

Visual and Functional Highlights

  • Viewing Deck: The roof serves as a viewing deck for events.
  • External Perimeter Corridor: Acts as a balcony for the restaurant and a service area for other private sections.
  • Natural Light Optimization: The glazed facade ensures maximum natural light.

This clubhouse seamlessly integrates into its natural surroundings while providing functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces for its users.
