What Happened?
As is customary at the start of each year in The Silver and surrounding areas, residents engage in the symbolic burning of dolls representing figures of public interest. This year, a large doll depicting Claudio Tapia, president of the AFA, became the focal point of the tradition. The effigy was burned at dawn in Berisso, accompanied by chants critical of the AFA.
The initiative was organized by “Los pibes de la 68,” a group of passionate fans of Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata. They selected Tapia as one of the “characters of the year” to be subjected to the fire ritual, a long-standing custom practiced throughout neighborhoods in the city during the year-end celebrations. The doll was meticulously crafted with recognizable features and staged at the intersection of 124 and 68 in the Villa Progreso neighborhood of Berisso.
Why Claudio Tapia? The Context of the Protest
The choice of Tapia as the target of the protest was intentional. Throughout 2023 and 2024, much of the controversy surrounding Tapia centered on his contentious relationship with Estudiantes de La Plata and it’s president, Juan Sebastián Verón. However, the protest was carried out by supporters of Gimnasia, the rival club, indicating a broader dissatisfaction with Tapia’s management of the AFA.
Recent polls demonstrate notable public disapproval of Tapia’s performance. A recent survey revealed widespread rejection of tapia and his administration within the AFA.

Financial Scrutiny and Allegations
The doll’s depiction of Tapia carrying two suitcases is especially significant. This imagery directly references ongoing scrutiny and allegations surrounding the AFA’s financial management under Tapia’s leadership. Concerns have been raised about transparency and the allocation of funds, fueling public distrust.
Specifically, questions have been raised regarding:
- Television Rights deals: The terms of recent television rights agreements have come under fire, with critics alleging unfavorable conditions for the AFA.
- World Cup Ticket distribution: The distribution of tickets for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was marred by controversy, with accusations of preferential treatment and irregularities.
- AFA Spending: Increased scrutiny has been placed on the AFA’s overall spending, with demands for greater accountability and transparency.
