Updated June 09, 2025
A British news photographer required emergency surgery after being struck by a non-lethal round while covering immigration protests in Los Angeles. Nick Stern was documenting a confrontation between anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) demonstrators and police in Paramount, Calif., when he was hit.
The incident occurred outside a home Depot, known as a gathering point for day laborers. A 14mm “sponge bullet” struck Stern in the thigh, according to the Press Association.
Stern is currently recovering at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. His immediate concern after being hit was whether live ammunition was being used. He noted that fellow protesters aided him, carrying him away after he noticed blood.

President Donald Trump addressed the Los Angeles immigration protests on Truth Social, describing the protesters as increasingly aggressive. He urged strong action.
“Don’t let these thugs get away with this. MAKE AMERICA GRATE AGAIN!!!” he wrote.
In subsequent posts, Trump called the situation in Los Angeles “really bad” and suggested deploying troops. He also demanded the immediate arrest of individuals wearing face masks.
“Looking really bad in L.A. BRING IN THE TROOPS!!!”
“ARREST THE PEOPLE IN FACE MASKS, NOW!”
What’s next
the Los Angeles Police Department has not yet commented on the incident involving Stern. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
