Updated May 27, 2025
Michael La Sasso, a junior at Ole Miss, navigated a challenging round to capture the NCAA individual men’s golf championship in Carlsbad, Calif., on Monday. La Sasso’s even-par 72, which included recovery from two double bogeys with crucial birdies, propelled him to an 11-under 277 total at La Costa Resort.
La Sasso’s impressive performance earned him a two-stroke victory over Phichaksn Miachon of Texas A&M. This triumph marks him as only the second Ole Miss golfer to claim an NCAA title. The individual NCAA golf title also secures La Sasso’s participation in the U.S. Open at Oakmont in two weeks and the Masters Tournament next April.
Adding to the excitement, Ole Miss secured the eighth and final spot for team match play, advancing by a single stroke over Florida State. Luke Clanton of Florida State, despite two PGA Tour runner-up finishes, faced a tough finish to his collage career as the Seminoles fell short.
La Sasso, starting the final day with a two-shot lead, faced adversity with the double bogeys but maintained composure. Miachon, despite an initial surge, couldn’t sustain momentum, carding a final round of 72.
“I had a little rough patch in the middle of the round, and being able to bounce back from that is something truly special,” La Sasso said.
Clanton, ranked as the No. 1 amateur globally,is set to transition to professional golf, debuting at the RBC Canadian Open next week.
