LA Servicemen Hotline Calls Rise – NBC Los Angeles
National Guard Members in Los Angeles Question Deployment Orders
The deployment of National Guard members and U.S. Marines to Los Angeles has triggered confusion and concern among some troops, according to the GI Rights Hotline. Steve Woolford, a resource counselor with the hotline, said many are grappling with the implications of their orders.
The GI Rights Hotline,a non-profit providing guidance to military personnel, has experienced a surge in calls.Woolford noted a notable increase, reporting 50 calls on a recent Sunday, compared to the usual 200 per month.
Woolford said the calls primarily originate from service members, their families, and others affected by the National Guard’s mobilization in Los Angeles. He relayed that many troops never anticipated possibly confronting fellow U.S. citizens or suppressing free speech.
Some service members are struggling with the prospect of being deployed in their own communities. Woolford said they express concerns about potentially targeting neighbors or family members during immigration enforcement actions. This creates a conflict between their duty to the country and their loyalty to family.
Adding to the uncertainty, Woolford noted confusion surrounding conflicting directives from the federal government and California Gov.gavin Newsom, who is challenging the deployment in court.
“I don’t feel right about this, but what kind of consequences go with this? And so there’s people who are trying to sort out what might happen if they refuse to do things,” Woolford said, summarizing the questions he receives.
While most calls express apprehension, Woolford acknowledged a smaller number of individuals defend the deployment.
The GI Rights Hotline offers guidance on various issues, including reservist mobilizations.Woolford emphasized that they provide details and support, allowing callers to determine the best course of action for their individual circumstances. The hotline dose not dictate decisions but helps service members navigate complex situations.
What’s next
The situation remains fluid as legal challenges to the deployment unfold. The GI Rights Hotline will continue providing support and resources to service members navigating these uncertain times.
