WINDSOR, Ontario (AP) — ⁢The Canada Labor Congress (CLC) is calling on the federal government to implement support measures for ⁢unemployed workers and safeguard⁣ the Canadian automotive industry following the temporary shutdown of ⁤the Stellantis assembly plant in Windsor,⁢ Ontario.

CLC President Bea Bruske, speaking at a Monday press conference⁣ in windsor, emphasized the ⁣urgency of the situation. “We ask the government to ensure that solid support measures ⁢be set up for workers. They are worried not to be able to pay the rent and put food on the table,” Bruske said.

Bruske stated that current employment⁢ insurance services are insufficient for unemployed workers. She urged the government to support workers‌ affected by what she described as unjust prices set by former President Donald Trump.

Insufficient Compensation

Bruske reiterated the inadequacy of current benefits. “Most workers cannot afford to live with $500 per week,if we take‌ the rent or mortgage fees ⁣into account and the grocery store,” she⁣ said.

The plant closure‌ impacts‌ more than 3,000 workers in Canada and nearly 1,000 in the United⁢ States.

Closure Could ⁤Extend Beyond Initial Two weeks

Bruske expressed concern that the Stellantis plant closure in Windsor could last longer than the initially projected two weeks.

“So we are very worried. This is why we want to make sure that Canada’s social security net ‌is well consolidated,” she explained.

According to ‍Bruske, government intervention is needed to prevent banks from seizing property and to provide workers with financial relief during this challenging period.

We must defend jobs today⁤ while building a more autonomous and more resistant economy for tomorrow.

Call to Workers: Demand Answers from Candidates

The Stellantis plant’s two-week shutdown⁣ coincides with the 16th day of the⁤ federal election campaign.

“We want to make sure that workers’ support measures are at the heart‌ of this ⁢electoral campaign,” Bruske stated.

She is urging workers to demand clear commitments from political parties during the federal campaign.
