Five teenagers from Brunswick High School in Frederick County, Md., face assault charges, with one also charged with
sexual assault, following an investigation into an april incident in the lacrosse locker room. The Frederick County
Sheriff’s Office also revealed an earlier, unreported incident.
Sheriff Chuck Jenkins stated that the criminal allegations against the students, aged 15 to 17, will be handled in
juvenile court. Detectives probing the April 11 incident discovered a similar event occurred on April 3, involving
some of the same students and a second alleged victim. The investigation into the lacrosse team assault charges
continues.
“I think the investigators did a great job of broadening the investigation to find that second event, second incident
that happened previous to the first reported incident,” Jenkins said.
The parents of one alleged victim, referred to as John Doe #1, have filed a lawsuit accusing the school’s principal,
athletic director, and head lacrosse coach of negligence.the lawsuit claims the initial assault occurred in the
unsupervised lacrosse locker room before practice.
“[…] as many as three lacrosse players held [the student down],” and”[…} touched, assaulted and slapped him with a
(sex toy).”
The lawsuit further alleges the perpetrators recorded the sexual assault and distributed the video publicly. John Doe
reportedly left the locker room and immediately contacted his mother, who then contacted the athletic director and
coach, demanding they call the police. The parents contacted authorities themselves several hours later after school
officials failed to do so.
Parents of Brunswick students expressed concern about the incident and the need for administrative accountability.
“Anything like that to take seriously, yes, but it’s also crucial that the administration is held accountable,
too,” one parent said.
A spokesperson for Frederick County Public Schools declined to comment, citing pending litigation.
What’s next
The juvenile court will handle the cases against the five teenagers. The lawsuit against Brunswick High School
officials is ongoing. Further details regarding the investigation into the lacrosse team assault charges are expected
to emerge as the legal proceedings unfold.
