LADWP Charts Course for Carbon-Free, Water-Secure Future at annual Workshop
LOS ANGELES (December 12, 2024) – The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) unveiled ambitious plans to propel Los Angeles toward a lasting future at its annual Utility Trends workshop, held virtually on December 5th.The event, now in its sixth year, brought together LADWP’s Key Account customers – its largest institutional, governmental, and commercial clients – to discuss industry trends and the utility’s long-term vision.

A Focus on Sustainability and Innovation
LADWP’s Key Accounts Section, comprised of approximately 30 dedicated account advisors, serves as the primary point of contact for these large customers, ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of water and power.
The workshop featured updates on several key initiatives, including:
100% Carbon-Free Energy by 2035: LADWP reaffirmed its commitment to achieving a 100% carbon-free energy grid by 2035, building on the LA100 Study. The Department’s 2024 Strategic Long-Term Resource Plan (SLTRP) outlines a roadmap for achieving this goal through increased renewable energy investments, expanded electrification, and robust energy efficiency programs. Initiatives include boosting solar and wind investments, increasing energy storage capacity, modernizing generation stations, developing transmission infrastructure, and offering customer programs and incentives.
Preparing for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games: With the 2028 Olympics on the horizon, LADWP is actively enhancing energy and water infrastructure to meet the demands of the Games. The Department is collaborating closely with city partners to identify and address all needs, including supporting the Games Route Network for seamless athlete and spectator transit.
Pure Water Los Angeles: A Sustainable Water Future: LADWP’s Pure Water initiative aims to transform treated wastewater into a sustainable, potable resource, addressing local water supply challenges. The program targets converting 100% of the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant to water recycling and producing 130 million gallons a day of recycled water by 2056. Phase 1, which will produce 50 million gallons a day, is expected to be completed by 2040.
Maintaining Drinking Water quality: LADWP emphasized its commitment to providing safe and reliable drinking water, meticulously monitoring water quality and reporting to regulators to ensure compliance with all standards.
* Expanding Energy Efficiency Incentives: LADWP continues to integrate equity into its planning, including programs to address energy burden and expand access to energy efficiency and renewable energy incentives. The Department is increasing investment in these programs, offering higher incentive rates to help customers adapt to the changing energy landscape.
