Updated⁢ July 3, 2025

The Los Angeles Lakers are signing free-agent center Deandre Ayton ‌to a two-year, $16.6 ‌million contract, according ‌to NBA insider Chris haynes. The deal includes a player option in the second year,‍ Jake Fischer reported.

Ayton, once a highly touted Lakers center target, became attainable after securing a buyout from the Portland Trail Blazers. This cleared the way for Los Angeles to sign him at a more manageable price.

Prior⁢ to Ayton’s availability, the Lakers’ options at center appeared limited.⁢ A potential trade for Utah‍ Jazz big man Walker Kessler fell through. Other ‍free agents, such as Brook lopez and‍ Clint Capela, ⁣presented drawbacks. Lopez signed with the Clippers, while Capela joined the ‌Rockets.

ayton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, offers the Lakers⁢ a chance to fill ⁢the void at center. The Lakers have a history of targeting⁣ high draft picks who haven’t reached their full potential, finding success with rui Hachimura.

Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Ayton sought to join a‍ winning team after his ⁤buyout. He previously⁣ reached the NBA Finals with the Phoenix Suns in 2021.

During his time in Phoenix,⁢ Ayton demonstrated his ability‌ as a franchise ⁣center, showcasing strong defensive skills.

What’s next

With⁣ Ayton in the fold, the‌ Lakers aim to solidify their frontcourt and provide Anthony Davis with a reliable partner in the paint as they contend in ‍the Western Conference.
