The Houston Rockets staved off elimination Wednesday night, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 99-93 to force a Game 6 in their first-round NBA playoff series. The Lakers now lead the series 3-2, with the next game scheduled for Friday in Houston.
Despite the return of Austin Reaves to the Lakers lineup after a nine-game injury absence, the team committed 15 turnovers, contributing to their defeat. LeBron James led the Lakers with 25 points and seven assists, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Houston’s resilient performance.
Jabari Smith Jr. Paced the Rockets with 22 points, while Tari Eason added 18. Alperen Sengun contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists for Houston. The Rockets’ victory came even without top scorer Kevin Durant, who has missed four of the series’ five games due to injury.
Lakers’ Struggles with Turnovers Prove Costly
The Lakers’ 15 turnovers proved to be a significant factor in their loss, marking their worst performance of the series in that regard. This was only their second loss in 16 home games since February, highlighting the unusual nature of the defeat. Reaves added 22 points and six assists in his return, but couldn’t offset the team’s struggles with ball control.
Deandre Ayton added 18 points and 17 rebounds for Los Angeles before being ejected in the third quarter. Jaxson Hayes replaced Ayton, but was limited with four fouls.
Rockets Extend Series, Defying Historical Odds
The Rockets’ win marks only the 16th time in NBA history that a team has forced a Game 6 after trailing 3-0 in a playoff series. Only four of the 159 teams that have faced a 3-0 deficit have ever managed to force a Game 7.

Houston demonstrated a gritty performance to overcome the Lakers, sending the series back to their home court for a crucial Game 6 on Friday night.
Gobert Leads Timberwolves to Second Round
In other playoff action Wednesday night, the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 103-96, winning the series 4-1. Center Rudy Gobert had a standout performance, scoring 27 points and grabbing 24 rebounds. This performance was a significant turnaround for Gobert, who had only scored a combined 14 points in the series’ first four games.
Gobert’s strong showing compensated for the Timberwolves’ struggles from three-point range, where they shot just 7-for-47. A key moment came midway through the fourth quarter when Gobert contested a jump shot from LeBron James and then secured a put-back dunk, giving the Timberwolves a 91-88 lead.
With the victory, the Timberwolves advance to the second round, where they will await the winner of the series between the Houston Rockets and the Golden State Warriors.
