Los Angeles Lakers forward Deandre Ayton acknowledged the team’s frustration following their 99-93 loss to the Houston Rockets in Game 5 of the NBA playoffs on Wednesday, April 30, 2026. The Rockets now trail the series 3-2, with Game 6 scheduled to be played in Houston.

Despite the loss, Ayton expressed confidence in the team’s resolve, stating that the Lakers remain “fired up” heading into Game 6. The game saw Austin Reaves return to the lineup after a period of absence, contributing 22 points and six assists. However, the Lakers struggled with their shooting accuracy, a factor coach JJ Redick identified as a key issue in the defeat.

“We just couldn’t make shots,”

JJ Redick

Redick noted that the team missed several layups and open three-point shots, impacting their offensive rhythm. He indicated that the team would analyze their substitution patterns and overall process to identify areas for improvement before the next game.

LeBron James led the Lakers in scoring with 25 points. However, the Rockets’ starting lineup proved formidable, with all five players scoring in double figures and collectively contributing 81 points to secure the win. Marcus Smart emphasized the need for the Lakers to match the Rockets’ desperation in Game 6, describing the series as having become “a lot more fun.”

“We just need to match their desperation,”

Marcus Smart

Smart also highlighted Ayton’s strong performance, noting his early impact with eight points and five rebounds, including three offensive rebounds, in the opening minutes. Reaves’ return also provided an immediate boost to the team’s offense.

The series will now shift back to Houston, where the Rockets will attempt to force a Game 7. The Lakers will be looking to close out the series and advance in the playoffs, but will need to address their shooting struggles and maintain the intensity required to overcome a determined Rockets team.
