In a landmark deal, the Buss family has agreed to sell majority ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers. The buyer is Mark Walter, chairman of TWG Global and also owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.Sources familiar with the deal peg the valuation at approximately $10 billion.
This sale marks the largest transaction for a U.S. professional sports team. walter’s TWG Global has holdings in several sports organizations, including the Los Angeles Sparks, the Billie Jean Cup, the Cadillac Formula 1 team, and the Professional Women’s Hockey League.
Jeanie Buss will continue as the Lakers governor, maintaining a leadership role within the association.
The Buss family’s ownership of the Lakers dates back to 1979, when Jerry Buss purchased the team, along with the Los Angeles Kings and the Los Angeles Forum, for $67.5 million from Jack Kent cooke. Since 1980, the Lakers have secured 11 NBA championships, more than any other team.
