The NBA has fined Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball $35,000 and assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 following an incident involving Miami Heat center-forward Bam Adebayo during the SoFi Play-In Tournament on April 14, 2026.

The disciplinary action follows a league office review of the Hornets’ 127-126 overtime victory over the Heat. In addition to the penalty for the on-court contact, the NBA issued a separate $25,000 fine to Ball for the use of profane language during a live postgame television interview.

Details of the On-Court Incident

The incident occurred during the opening minute of the second quarter, with 11:13 remaining in the period. According to league reports, Ball was bumped to the floor after his shot was blocked. While Ball was on the ground, Bam Adebayo leaped into the air to save the ball from going out of bounds, tossing it to Heat forward Pelle Larsson before landing out of bounds.

The contact had an immediate impact on the game. Adebayo was forced to exit the contest and was unable to play the final two-plus quarters or the overtime period. The Heat ultimately lost the elimination game by a single point.

Reactions and Aftermath

Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra expressed strong disapproval of the play immediately following the game on April 14, 2026, stating that Ball should have been ejected from the game for his actions.

Following the Hornets’ victory, LaMelo Ball issued an apology for the play that caused Adebayo’s fall. Despite the severity of the league’s retrospective assessment, Ball was not called for a flagrant foul or ejected during the live play.

The incident has also drawn attention to a similar occurrence on January 14, 2024, in Miami, where Ball likewise fell to the ground and reached out at one of Adebayo’s legs as the Heat player moved up the floor.

Outside of the team environment, the incident sparked public debate. Lonzo Ball defended his brother after sports commentator Nick Wright referred to LaMelo as a clown.

Playoff Implications

The Hornets’ overtime win on April 14, 2026, keeps their postseason hopes alive. Despite the fines and the retrospective flagrant foul, the NBA has confirmed that LaMelo Ball will not be suspended for the next stage of the tournament.

Ball is expected to be available for Charlotte’s Play-In game on April 17, 2026, which will determine if the Hornets advance to the playoffs.
