Lamine Yamal Birthday Probe: Dwarf Entertainers
Lamine Yamal’s 18th Birthday Party Sparks Controversy Over Entertainment Choices
Barcelona’s rising star lamine yamal is facing scrutiny after his 18th birthday celebration in Olivella, near Barcelona, reportedly featured individuals with dwarfism as entertainment, prompting an inquiry by Spain’s Social Rights Ministry.
The ministry has requested the prosecutor’s office to examine whether the law has been violated and if the rights of people with disabilities were infringed upon, following a complaint lodged by the Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias with Dwarfism (ADEE).
The ADEE publicly denounced the hiring of people with dwarfism for entertainment purposes, stating that such practices “perpetuate stereotypes, fuel discrimination and undermine the image and rights” of individuals with disabilities. The association has indicated its intention to pursue legal action.
While guests were reportedly prohibited from filming at the private event, a video has surfaced showing a group of people with dwarfism entering the party venue. One of the performers, speaking anonymously to Catalan radio station RAC1, defended the engagement, asserting that “no one disrespected us. We were allowed to work in peace.” The performer, who stated that four individuals were part of the entertainment group, emphasized that they are “normal people who dedicate themselves to what we love doing in an absolutely legal way.”
The performer also suggested that the controversy is specifically linked to Yamal’s party, implying that the ADEE has a history of targeting such engagements. “For a couple of years, these people [the ADEE] have wanted to harm us,” the performer stated. “They want to prevent us from doing what we like, but they have not offered any work or training to those who are affected.” The performer further elaborated that their roles at such events include dancing, serving drinks, and performing magic tricks.
Lamine Yamal, who celebrated his 18th birthday on Sunday, the day after the party, is widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in world football. His stellar performances last season were instrumental in Barcelona securing a domestic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. The Spain international has amassed 25 goals in 106 appearances for Barcelona as making his debut at the age of 15 in 2023, and is considered a strong contender for future Ballon d’Or awards.
Yamal’s representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the controversy. The Social rights Ministry confirmed its request for an investigation to AFP on Tuesday.
