DORTMUND, Germany – Before FC Barcelona’s Champions League match against Borussia dortmund, football analysts Christoph Kramer and Mark van Bommel expressed considerable admiration for Barcelona’s young talent, Lamine Yamal. Despite Dortmund’s aspirations for a comeback after a first-leg defeat, much of the pre-match discussion centered on the Spanish team’s offensive capabilities.
FC Barcelona’s history boasts formidable attacking trios, most notably the one featuring Neymar, Luis Suárez, and Lionel Messi. This trio significantly influenced both the club and global football. Now, under coach Hansi Flick, the team showcases a new attacking lineup, including Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and the emerging star, Lamine Yamal.
The 17-year-old Yamal has particularly impressed observers. During the Amazon Prime Video broadcast, van Bommel, a former Barcelona player, drew a striking parallel: “What Lamine is already doing is similar to Messi.I experienced Messi when he was 16. I think Lamine is now better in his own way.But that’s a very risky sentence for me.”
Van Bommel acknowledged the weight of his comparison, adding, “What will happen in the future, over the next few years, he still has to show big.” He emphasized that Yamal has a long journey ahead to reach Messi’s legendary status.
Kramer Weighs In
Kramer echoed Van Bommel’s sentiments, stating, “I would not have thought that I would compare a player with Messi again in my life, but when I see him I have to do it a bit. It’s very blatant.”
However, Kramer also offered a cautionary perspective. “If Yamal wants to come up with Messi’s statistics, then he has to do 40 goals plus per season in the next 20 years. You can see what Messi was for a player.”
Yamal’s current season statistics include 14 goals and 21 assists in 44 appearances for Barcelona. Kramer concluded, “That you compare him with Messi is almost not possible. It is indeed still a long way to go.”
