Longwood Lancers Secure Last-Minute Victory Against UT Martin Skyhawks

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood Lancers (4-0) defeated the UT Martin Skyhawks (2-2) with a dramatic finish, winning 64-62. The Lancers were down by eight points with just 1:56 left in the game, but rallied to take their first lead with only three seconds remaining.

Jaylen Benard made a three-pointer to cut the deficit to five points. KJ McClurg led the Lancers with 25 points and drew a foul for two free throws, narrowing the gap to three points. After a missed shot from the Skyhawks, Benard again scored a three-pointer to tie the game.

UT Martin’s Afan Trnka had a chance to regain the lead at the free-throw line but missed after being distracted by the Lancers’ student section. With three seconds left, Kyrell Luc hit two free throws to secure the win.

Coach Griff Aldrich praised the team’s ability to find a way to win despite struggles throughout the game. McClurg scored 25 points, made six free throws, and helped the Lancers rally when it mattered most. Johan Nziemi added eight points, with Benard contributing eight points and six rebounds.

The Lancers faced a challenging first half, scoring only 24 points and falling behind by 13 points. They struggled against the Skyhawks’ height and length on defense. Despite that, they managed to cut the lead to nine points by halftime.

With this victory, the Lancers maintain their undefeated season. Their upcoming schedule includes four road games, starting with a matchup against Binghamton on November 19 at 6 p.m. Following that, they will compete in the Paradise Jam tournament in the Virgin Islands, playing against the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Aldrich expressed optimism about the road games. He believes they will strengthen team bonds and help them develop their identity. “This is a talented group of guys. I’m excited about their potential,” he stated.
