San Diego International Airport reported a notable increase in passenger traffic during the spring of 2026, reflecting broader trends in domestic and international travel to Southern California. Airport officials confirmed that arrivals and departures rose steadily through March and April, driven by tourism, business travel, and seasonal migration patterns.
According to data released by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, the airport handled over 4.2 million passengers in the first quarter of 2026, marking a 7.3 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025. International arrivals saw particularly strong growth, up 12.1 percent, with notable increases from Mexico, Canada, and Asia-Pacific regions.
Airport spokesperson Lisa Chen attributed the rise to renewed confidence in air travel, expanded flight schedules by major carriers, and San Diego’s growing appeal as a destination for both leisure and innovation-sector business. “We’re seeing more travelers drawn to the region’s quality of life, coastal access, and expanding tech and biotech hubs,” Chen said in a statement to News Directory 3.
The increase aligns with statewide trends reported by Caltrans and Visit California, which noted a 6.8 percent rise in visitor spending across San Diego County during the first three months of 2026. Hotel occupancy rates in downtown San Diego and Mission Bay averaged 79 percent in March, up from 74 percent the previous year, according to STR, a global hotel data analytics firm.
To accommodate the growth, the airport has implemented phased improvements to Terminal 2, including expanded security lanes, upgraded baggage handling systems, and enhanced wayfinding signage. Construction on a new consolidated rental car facility began in February and is scheduled for completion by late 2027.
Environmental officials noted that while passenger numbers are rising, the airport continues to meet emissions benchmarks under its Sustainability Management Plan. Initiatives such as ground power utilization for aircraft, increased use of sustainable aviation fuel blends, and electric ground support equipment have helped offset some of the environmental impact of increased operations.
Looking ahead, airport authorities project annual passenger volume could exceed 22 million by 2028 if current trends continue. Long-term planning includes potential terminal expansions and improved public transit connections, including coordination with the Mid-Coast Trolley extension and future high-speed rail concepts.
As of April 2026, San Diego International Airport remains the busiest single-runway commercial airport in the United States, serving as a key gateway to the California-Baja California region and a vital economic engine for the local economy.
