Joseph Czuba, Sentenced to 53 Years for Hate Crime, Passes Away in Illinois Prison
JOLIET, Ill. – Joseph Czuba, the landlord who received a 53-year prison sentence for the brutal murder of 6-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi and the wounding of his mother, Hanan shaheen, has died. Czuba passed away on Thursday while in the custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to a statement released by the will County Sheriff’s Office.
The 73-year-old Czuba was convicted in February on charges of murder, attempted murder, and hate crimes. his conviction stemmed from a horrific attack in October 2023, where he targeted the Palestinian American family due to their Islamic faith and in response to the escalating war between Israel and Hamas.
ahmed Rehab, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Chicago office, commented on Czuba’s death, stating, “This depraved killer has died, but the hate is still alive and well.”
A Brutal Attack Fueled by Hate
The trial presented harrowing evidence, including emotional testimony from Wadee’s mother, Hanan Shaheen, and her desperate 911 call. Prosecutors also presented graphic crime scene photos and police video footage that underscored the brutality of the attack.Jurors reached their verdict in less than 90 minutes, reflecting the overwhelming evidence against Czuba. The family had been renting rooms in Czuba’s home in Plainfield, a suburb approximately 40 miles southwest of Chicago, when the violence erupted. Prosecutors detailed how Czuba allegedly attacked Hanan Shaheen before turning his attention to her young son,Wadee, reportedly telling them they had to leave because they were Muslim.
Czuba’s ex-wife, Mary Czuba, testified for the prosecution, revealing that her former husband had become increasingly agitated by the Israel-Hamas war, which had begun just days before the attack.
The Horrific Details of the Crime
During the trial, it was revealed that Czuba retrieved a knife from a belt holder and repeatedly stabbed Wadee, inflicting 26 wounds and leaving the knife embedded in the child’s body. The graphic nature of some crime scene photographs led the judge to direct that the screens displaying them be turned away from the audience, which included Wadee’s grieving relatives.
Community Impact and Legacy
The attack sent shockwaves through the community, especially in Plainfield and surrounding areas with a meaningful Palestinian population, renewing fears of anti-Muslim discrimination. Wadee Alfayoumi’s funeral was attended by large crowds, and local officials later dedicated a park playground in his honour, a testament to the profound impact of the tragedy. Czuba’s death marks the end of his legal accountability, but the pain and the fight against hate continue for the victims and their community.
