Landman’ Star Michelle Randolph on Filming That Viral Sex Talk Scene
’Landman’s’ Cringeworthy Father-Daughter talk has the Internet in Stitches
Paramount+’s new hit series Landman, starring Billy Bob Thornton, has taken the streaming world by storm, becoming the platform’s most-watched original series ever. But it’s not just the gritty Texas oil drama that’s grabbing attention – a particularly awkward scene featuring Thornton adn his on-screen daughter, played by Michelle Randolph, has gone viral for all the wrong reasons.
The scene, which unfolds in the premiere episode, sees Thornton’s character, Tommy, engaging in a deeply uncomfortable conversation with his 17-year-old daughter, Ainsley, about her sex life.Ainsley, played by Randolph, delivers a graphic description of the “rule” she and her football-star boyfriend follow to prevent pregnancy, leaving viewers both shocked and amused.
The internet, predictably, exploded. Memes, reactions, and bewildered comments flooded social media platforms, with many questioning the dialog’s authenticity and praising (or mocking) Randolph’s deadpan delivery.
Randolph, who also stars in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel 1923, recently addressed the viral scene in an interview with The Wrap. “How could you not [see the online discourse]?” she admitted, adding that she knew the show would spark conversation. “I just thought to myself, ‘How am I going to say this with a straight face, looking into Billy’s eyes?’ I was Ainsley in that moment. I was not Michelle. And as Michelle, I will never be saying that to my father. Let’s be clear.”
Filming the scene proved to be a challenge, Randolph revealed. “There was definitely a point where my face turned radiant red and we started laughing, because I just couldn’t help it,” she shared. The scene was shot during a real football game, adding another layer of awkwardness. “They don’t know anything about the show. They don’t know the scripts. They don’t know the premise, and if they can overhear this one line, what do they think that we’re filming?”
love it or hate it, the scene has undoubtedly made Landman a hot topic of conversation. The series, which follows Thornton’s character as he navigates the complex world of Texas oil, is currently streaming on Paramount+.
