Lando Norris Leads Practice: Zandvoort Results
McLaren Shocks verstappen at Home: Norris leads teh Charge in Zandvoort FP1
ZANDVOORT, Netherlands – the Formula 1 summer slumber is officially over, and the Dutch Grand Prix weekend has roared to life with a surprising shakeup at the top. Lando Norris, behind the wheel of his McLaren, stunned the Zandvoort crowd by setting the fastest time in the opening practice session, leaving home-favourite Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team playing catch-up.
Under dry but blustery conditions,Norris clocked a blistering 1m 10.278s, outpacing not only Verstappen but also his own teammate, Oscar Piastri, who secured a strong second-place finish. Aston Martin’s Lance stroll rounded out the top three, signaling a perhaps competitive weekend for the Silverstone-based squad.
The session wasn’t without its drama. Lewis Hamilton endured a heart-stopping 360-degree spin early on, reporting significant flat spots on his tires. Yuki Tsunoda also had an off-track excursion, while Kimi Antonelli found himself stuck in the gravel at Turn 9, bringing out the red flags and halting the session temporarily.
Despite the interruptions, teams diligently worked through their programs, with most initially opting for the medium compound tires. Pirelli, celebrating their 500th World Championship Grand Prix, will be closely monitoring tire performance throughout the weekend.
as FP1 progressed, attention shifted to soft tire runs, allowing drivers to push for outright pace. While Piastri closed the gap to Norris, the Briton’s earlier time remained unchallenged. Fernando Alonso impressed with a fourth-place finish, followed by Alex Albon in his williams and George Russell in the Mercedes.
The final quarter of the hour saw teams focusing on medium-shod long runs, a crucial exercise given the threat of rain later in the weekend. Stroll, however, expressed his frustration over the radio after encountering a slow-moving Tsunoda on track.
