Lando Norris Gets Light Penalty After Canadian Grand Prix Incident

McLaren’s Lando Norris received what some consider a lenient penalty after a collision with teammate Oscar Piastri during the Canadian Grand Prix.The incident occurred with only four laps remaining, as Norris attempted to overtake Piastri for fourth place.
Norris misjudged the distance, clipping the back of Piastri’s McLaren. This resulted in damage to Norris’s suspension, forcing him to retire. He took full obligation for the crash in post-race interviews. The stewards investigated and agreed that Norris was at fault. Though, they only issued a five-second penalty, which had no bearing on Norris’s final position as he had already been classified 18th.
Stewards also chose not to award any penalty points on Norris’s super license, a decision left to their discretion. While the crash ended Norris’s race,the penalty’s lack of impact raised eyebrows. The standard penalty for causing a collision is typically a ten-second penalty and two penalty points.
The stewards explained their leniency in a statement, saying, “the Stewards determined that the driver of Car 4 [Norris] was solely to blame for the collision. Because the collision had no immediate and obvious sporting consequence, we imposed a 5 second time post-race time penalty on Car 4.”
As Norris completed over 90% of the race, he was classified in the results, allowing stewards to issue a time penalty rather of a grid penalty for the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix. This Formula 1 penalty role coudl have significant implications for the championship.
