Ann Arbor, MI – The University of Michigan (U-M) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are joining forces to create a state-of-the-art research center dedicated to advancing high-performance computing and artificial intelligence (AI). This groundbreaking partnership aims to bolster U-M’s research capabilities in science, energy, and national security while injecting new jobs into southeast Michigan’s economy.

Located in Washtenaw County, the facility will house two interconnected computing centers. one center will support LANL scientists and engineers tackling critical national security AI challenges. The adjacent academic computing center will empower U-M faculty,students,and university partners across Michigan to collaborate with LANL researchers on multidisciplinary projects.

“Our new partnership and growing collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory will sustain and strengthen U-M’s impact and excellence in research, innovation, and finding solutions,” said U-M President Santa J.Ono. “This effort will create high-quality jobs and invigorate Michigan’s place in the growing AI ecosystem and flourishing facts economy.”

This expanded partnership builds on a recent five-year, $15 million research contract between U-M and LANL, focusing on developing advanced computing technologies, including AI and elegant modeling techniques, to address complex challenges like harnessing fusion energy.

The new facility will also serve as a hub for joint workforce development programs and educational initiatives for students and trainees.
