Lanzarote and La Graciosa Declared Water Emergency Amid Severe Drought

Lanzarote and La Graciosa, two popular vacation islands in the Canary Islands, are facing a serious water shortage. On Friday, the islands’ water council announced a six-month water crisis to address the severe effects of drought.

Erik Martín, the head of the water council, stated, “We are in a critical, but temporary and reversible situation.” The council aims to ensure a stable water supply for residents during this time of extreme drought.

The water crisis stems from the harsh effects of drought on the islands. Authorities will implement urgent measures to secure the water supply in both the short and long term.

Domingo Cejas, a water advisor for the Lanzarote council, led the key meeting on this issue. He said, “This is a significant step forward in managing the water challenges.” Cejas highlighted that the decision was made after thorough discussions with regional and local government representatives, as well as agricultural associations and business groups.

This is not the first time the Canary Islands have faced a water crisis. Earlier this fall, the Spanish municipality of Mogán had to impose various water restrictions.
