Updated June 17, 2025
A photographer covering a downtown los Angeles protest against President Donald Trump’s policies sustained a serious eye injury after being struck by a rubber bullet. Marshall Woodruff,28,is currently recovering at Los Angeles General Medical Center following the incident Saturday.
the ”No Kings” protest drew an estimated 30,000 people to LA City Hall. Woodruff described an initially peaceful exhibition that later escalated into clashes between protesters and law enforcement. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) formed a line facing the crowd around 5 p.m.
Woodruff recounted a chaotic scene involving horses and a barrage of rubber bullets. He said he was struck in the arm and right eye. The protest against trump policies turned violent.
Following the injury, Woodruff underwent five hours of surgery to reconstruct part of his eye. The extent of his vision loss remains uncertain, according to doctors. The incident occured amid heightened tensions and a citywide curfew.
The LAPD declared an unlawful assembly around 4 p.m. Saturday, citing reports of bottles and rocks being thrown at officers. Woodruff said he was unaware of any dispersal order. The police response is under scrutiny.
“It sort of felt like I got slammed into the side of the head with a baseball thrown by the world’s greatest pitcher,” Woodruff said, describing the impact of the rubber bullet. “You just think to yourself, ‘I need to get out.’”
Woodruff criticized the LAPD’s handling of the situation, suggesting their response was disproportionate. He believes the protest response was unjustifiable.
“What I witnessed on Saturday was unjustifiable,” he said. “And for me, I think that is a clear indication that it wasn’t the protesters that were the problem; I think it was the LAPD and how they chose to respond to the situation.”
The LAPD reported that three officers were injured during the protest. The department has not released information regarding civilian injuries.
What’s next
An investigation into the incident is ongoing. Woodruff faces a long recovery with uncertain prospects for regaining full vision in his injured eye.
