Future PLC Shuts Down ⁤laptop Mag Amid Brand Portfolio restructuring

‌ ⁢ ‍ Updated July 2, 2025

Future PLC, a digital publishing company based in⁢ the‍ U.K., has⁣ shuttered Laptop Mag, ⁤a consumer technology publisher with 33 years in the industry. The closure, which⁤ took ⁤effect tuesday, reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to consolidate ⁤its brand portfolio and streamline operations.

The decision to ⁣close Laptop Mag impacted fewer than 10 staffers.Faisal Alani, global brand director ⁤at Future PLC, informed employees of the closure in a⁣ brief meeting. A ⁣company spokesperson ‍declined ⁣to comment on the⁢ matter.

“After careful consideration and a review of our long-term strategy, we’ve made the decision to close ‌the ⁣Laptop⁢ Mag business effective today,” Alani said.

This shutdown is part of a broader restructuring strategy. Kevin Li Ying, the newly ⁤appointed chief executive, revealed in‍ May that Future had closed 19 underperforming brands in fiscal year 2024, followed by four more in the first‌ half of 2025. These closures, including niche verticals and smaller ⁤tech titles like⁢ Laptop ‍Mag, were deemed “immaterial to revenue and profit.” Laptop Mag provided reviews‍ of computers, accessories, and ‌consumer electronics.

The decision to wind ⁤down Laptop ⁣Mag comes amid ongoing commercial headwinds for Future. The company’s May‍ earnings report showed a 3% year-over-year decline in ⁣revenue, largely due to softness ⁤in U.S. advertising and a weaker pound. Shifts in consumer behavior have also impacted its⁢ business.

Future has⁢ also experienced leadership changes. Jon steinberg, who joined Future as CEO in April 2023, stepped down at the‌ end of March 2025. ‌His departure, along with that of Chief Financial Officer Penny ⁢Ladkin-Brand, raised⁣ investor concerns and led to a drop in Future’s share price.

The⁤ closure of Laptop Mag aligns with the trend of portfolio paring seen across digital media this year. As publishers face declining referral traffic, shifting ad markets, and the rise of AI-driven content, many are moving⁤ toward leaner, more profitable operations.

“This is the year of cleaning house,” a⁣ media investment banker said in⁤ May. “Most of the M&A we’re seeing in ⁤2025 is not expansion-it’s contraction.”

what’s next

For Future PLC, the closure of Laptop Mag signals a reassessment of its portfolio, ⁣with a focus on trimming titles that are deemed less essential to its overall strategy.
