Lara Fabian Reveals Eating Disorder Struggle in New Biography
In her new biography, Behind the Voice, singer Lara Fabian details a
seven-year battle with an eating disorder that brought her to the brink of
death. The book, available since April 24, explores the pressures adn
criticism fabian faced early in her career, contributing to her health
struggles.
Early Criticism and the Obsession with Thinness
Fabian, who was preparing for the release of her fourth album 25 years ago,
faced harsh judgment about her appearance even before the rise of social
media. She describes how these comments, though seemingly subtle, gradually
affected her.
According to fabian, a remark from an American stylist in 1999 proved to be
a turning point. The stylist allegedly told her she needed to lose weight
and become more blonde. This comment, as detailed in Behind the Voice,
sparked an obsession with her appearance that led to years of self-struggle.
“Complex Food Disorder” and Health Crisis
Fabian describes her condition as a “complex food disorder,” also known as
TCA, or eating disorder. Triggered by relentless criticism about her body,
she developed an obsessive desire to lose weight at any cost.
”In me, something broke and my descent into hell started,” Fabian said,
recounting nights spent unable to get up, with the scale showing a weight of
only 88 pounds. “I did a lot of trouble by not sleeping, not eating, taking
no care of myself,” she now reflects.
Finding a Path to Recovery
The eating disorder took a severe toll on Fabian’s health, leading to
extreme weakness and, eventually, a heart attack. This health crisis served
as a wake-up call.
Fabian found strength in her music and her desire to become a mother.
During a March 2 appearance on the program “A Sunday in the Countryside,”
she spoke about her recovery: “It was the soul of Lou which arrived
somewhere in my life. At one point, I said to myself: Lara, if you one day
want to become a mom, your body will have to manage it, that your body is
able to welcome it. This ship, we will have to repair it.”
Fabian added, “There has slowly started the ascent to health, towards the
joy of food, towards sharing it, transmitting it. I started to cure around
the age of 36.”
