Large Fire in Residential Building in Delfzijl Center Under Control
Inferno Engulfs Delfzijl Apartment,Prompting Massive Firefighting Response
Delfzijl,Netherlands – A raging fire erupted Saturday evening in a residential unit above a telecom store on Delfzijl’s bustling Landstraat, sending plumes of thick smoke billowing into the sky. Thankfully, no one was inside the building at the time of the blaze, according to fire department spokesperson Geert Anne Mollema.
The fire, wich broke out around 6 p.m. local time, quickly escalated, prompting authorities to declare a “major fire” due to the densely packed nature of the neighborhood.
“The fire spread rapidly, and the interconnected nature of the buildings made extinguishing it particularly challenging,” Mollema explained.
To gain a complete view of the situation, a drone team was deployed to survey the scene from above. Firefighters battled the inferno for hours, eventually gaining control around 8 p.m.Though, they remained on site for several more hours to ensure all hotspots were extinguished.
The intense heat and smoke prompted authorities to advise nearby residents to keep their windows and doors closed. To combat the blaze effectively,a large-scale water supply unit was mobilized, transporting significant amounts of water over long distances. This operation temporarily closed the Buitensingel to traffic. As firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the flames, they removed sections of the roof to access the heart of the fire.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
