Venezuela’s National Assembly confirmed Larry Devoe as the country’s new attorney general on April 9, 2026. Devoe, a 46-year-old close ally of interim President Delcy Rodriguez, was ratified with 275 assembly votes following a recommendation from a legislative commission.
The appointment fills a vacancy created by the resignation of former attorney general Tarek Saab in February 2026. Devoe had been serving as the interim attorney general since Saab stepped down.
Selection Process and Confirmation
The confirmation followed a selection process that evaluated more than 70 candidates. The decision was announced by assembly head Jorge Rodriguez, who is the brother of the acting president.
The appointment faced opposition from within the legislature. Opposition lawmaker Henrique Capriles proposed legal academic Magaly Vasquez as an alternative candidate. however, Vasquez received only 10 confirmation votes.
Professional Background
Prior to his confirmation as attorney general, Devoe held several leadership positions within the Venezuelan government. In addition to his role as interim attorney general, he served as the head of the National Council of Human Rights.
